Products: Aluminium alloy profiles
The plant in Meinerzhagen combines a forge, large and small extrusion plants and wheel production with its own foundry, which supplies this chain with round billets. The company states that approx. 88% of the aluminium processed in the foundry came (2020) from returned material from its own production – flash, press remnants and turnings – and the share of secondary aluminium in the whole operation was 72%. The foundry expansion was to raise recycling capacity by 20 kt per year; total remelting capacity is not published. The furnace park is based on Hertwich Ecomelt units: the fifth and largest of them, Ecomelt-PS150, has a throughput of 7.7 t/h, and the melting modernisation was to deliver approx. 6 kt of CO2 savings per year plus approx. 3 kt from higher metal yield. Separately, the company receives liquid primary aluminium directly from TRIMET. In January 2024 Bezirksregierung Arnsberg issued a decision for the melting and casting installation in Meinerzhagen. A family company operating since 1910, employing over five thousand people and operating nine locations worldwide. Besides profile extrusion it carries out die forging in aluminium, magnesium, titanium and nickel, serving aerospace, automotive and general industry. It is one of the few European plants combining extrusion of 7xxx series alloys with full heat treatment. The company does not publish production capacities. The largest independent European aluminium forger and one of the few suppliers of forged wheels for premium cars. Unlike foundries it does not buy casting alloy, but wrought ingots from 6xxx (6082, 6061) and 7xxx alloys for forgings of the highest strength – so it is a consumer of primary aluminium or high-grade wrought scrap, not mixed scrap. This difference in charge explains why aluminium forging benefits little from the growing supply of end-of-life scrap. The company does not publish throughput.
