Metals refinery operating since 1926 at Via Generale Porro 27 in Rovello Porro in the province of Como; declared casthouse capacity is approx. 20 kt per year. It is the only plant found in Italy that describes full closure of the residue category: it accepts not only scrap and swarf, but directly skimmings, slags and dusts, and its installation allows “processing, separation and recovery of all components – metals, metal oxides and salts”. The liquor produced from washing residues is subjected to evaporation and crystallisation, so the company returns to circulation pure sodium and potassium chlorides suitable for reuse as covering fluxes in aluminium melting – a practical answer to the question of salt slag processing in the country. The casthouse division consists of a shaft furnace and a furnace for homogenisation, alloying and refining of liquid metal. Besides alloys for die, permanent mould and sand casting, the plant supplies steelworks with ingots, hemispheres and granulates with an aluminium content of up to 98% for bath deoxidation, and provides a service of processing rolling mill and extrusion plant waste with the metal remaining the customer's property (toll processing).
