The plant at Ctra. de Cabezón s/n, 47011 Valladolid (EMAS register ES-CYL-000034) covers approx. 136,257 m² and is the largest installation in Spain for processing salt slag and spent cathode linings (SPL) from electrolysis. The process comprises crushing and metal separation, dissolving and reaction of the salt with inertisation of the waste, filtration and drying, and brine crystallisation; ammonia from the reaction is captured with sulphuric acid as ammonium sulphate. In 2024 it processed 147,773 t of material, including 136,357 t of salt slag and 11,416 t of SPL, yielding 128,234 t of Paval, 47,166 t of salt, 14,141 t of ammonium sulphate and 10,114 t of aluminium concentrate. The aluminium scrap grinding installation (process 3) is out of use, and dross grinding (process 2) was started up ad hoc in 2024. Paval goes to cement plants, producers of refractories and mineral wool, and as a deoxidising material in iron metallurgy.
