Despite the company’s historical name (Deeside), the plant is located on Bridge Road on the Wrexham Industrial Estate in North Wales and is Hydro’s only aluminium remelter in the United Kingdom. The plant page gives a capacity of up to 63 kt of ingots a year; a December 2021 announcement of a GBP 2.4 million investment to remove a bottleneck in the melting furnace forecast an increase in throughput to 70 kt per year – Hydro does not explain the discrepancy between the two figures. The feedstock is a mix of post-consumer scrap (joinery, wheel scrap) and post-production scrap, with casting by Wagstaff AirSlip technology with in-line filtration. In April 2024 Hydro announced an investment of NOK 180 million (approx. GBP 13 million) in the neighbouring HySort sorting plant for over 30 kt of scrap a year, with start-up in January 2026 and 16 new jobs – the aim is to keep in the country post-consumer scrap that is today exported from the Isles.
