The plant in the St. Peter district of Dormagen is not a remelter but a post-consumer scrap sorting hub, owned by Hydro since 2015. It sorts 36 kt of post-consumer scrap per year – wheel scrap, building profiles, scrap from dismantling vehicles and machines – which then goes to Hydro remelters in Europe, including Clervaux, Rackwitz and Lucé. It is the first installation of HySort technology, based on LIBS laser spectroscopy and in-stream alloy separation, which Hydro is replicating in Grandville (USA), Nowa Sól (PL) and Wrexham (GB). It employs 32 people. The plant is a key element of Hydro's goal of doubling post-consumer scrap processing (451 kt in 2024).
