### Hydro Karmøy (Karmøy, Norway)

- Link: primary aluminium smelter
- Status: operating
- Metals: aluminium
- Capacity: 270 kt/yr
- Coordinates: 59.281, 5.286

- Source [B]: Hydro – Karmøy Primary Production (270,000 t of primary aluminium per year) – https://www.hydro.com/en/global/about-hydro/hydro-worldwide/europe/norway/karmoy/karmoy-primary-production/
- Note: The plant where a demonstration line of electrolysis technology with energy consumption below 12.3 MWh per tonne was commissioned in 2018 – the lowest documented in the world. For European industry Karmøy is an argument that a technological advantage exists, but does not offset the difference in energy price.

### former recycling unit and extrusion plant (Drunen, Netherlands)

- Link: remelt and wrought-ingot casthouse
- Status: closed
- Metals: aluminium
- Coordinates: 51.683, 5.133
- Source [B]: Company website (hydro.com) – https://www.hydro.com/en/global/about-hydro/hydro-worldwide/europe/netherlands/drunen/hydro-drunen/

- Note: In Drunen Hydro operated an extrusion plant together with a recycling unit (remelter). Both were closed as part of the decision to concentrate aluminium profile production in Europe in fewer plants, and the product range was moved to other Hydro plants; the company does not give the exact closure date on its website. Hydro Pole Products (aluminium poles) and the Global Business Services shared services centre remained operating on the site. The processing capacity of the former remelter was not announced. After this change Hydro has one remelter in the Benelux – in Ghlin, Belgium; the plants in Harderwijk and Hoogezand are extrusion plants only, without their own remelting.

### aluminium recycling plant Torija (Torija (Guadalajara), Spain)

- Link: remelt and wrought-ingot casthouse
- Status: under construction
- Metals: aluminium
- Capacity: 120 kt/yr
- Coordinates: 40.744, -3.019

- Note: The largest aluminium recycling installation currently under construction on the Iberian Peninsula. The project was announced in June 2023 with a budget of EUR 130–140 million, and in February 2024 capital expenditure was raised to EUR 180 million; construction began in March 2025, the general contractor is Sacyr, and start-up was announced for 2026. Capacity is designed at 120,000 t of low-carbon recycled aluminium a year, of which up to 70,000 t is to be post-consumer scrap processed on an advanced sorting line. The products are to have a carbon footprint below 1.9 kg CO2/kg for Hydro CIRCAL and below 4.0 kg CO2/kg for the low-carbon variant. The plant is to employ about 70 people and serve electric transport, renewable energy and building systems. The “under construction” status reflects the latest confirmed reports – no announcement of the installation entering service was found.
