- Note: The only documented industrial aluminium scrap remelting plant in Portugal: a profile extrusion plant with a casthouse and a separate recycling unit, complemented by its own die shop; Hydro’s second location in the country, Prior Velho near Lisbon, covers only building systems. In March 2024 the plant produced the first batch of Hydro Recycled Low Carbon solely from post-consumer scrap, without the addition of circulating scrap or primary aluminium, achieving a carbon footprint below 0.5 kg CO2e/kg. The earlier investment in Avintes was carried out in parallel with the expansion of the melt shop in Irurtzun. The company has not disclosed the remelting capacity of Avintes alone – the quoted volume of 85,000 t of recycled aluminium and 60,000 t of extruded products relates to the entire Hydro Extrusion division for Spain and Portugal, employing over 500 people.
